The Pharma-Planta Consortium was one of Europe's ambitious collaborative research initiatives dedicated to the development of plant-based pharmaceutical production.
Supported through the European Union Sixth Framework Programme, the consortium brought together universities, biotechnology organizations and industrial partners to establish an integrated production pipeline for recombinant pharmaceutical proteins in genetically engineered plants.

The mission of Pharma-Planta was to advance Europe as a leading research environment for molecular farming by developing reliable and safe production platforms for recombinant pharmaceutical proteins in plants.

From Molecular Research to Clinical Development
Pharma-Planta advanced the scientific and regulatory development of plant-derived pharmaceutical proteins beyond laboratory investigation. Its programme culminated in a Phase I human clinical trial in 2011, demonstrating an important milestone in the development of plant-made pharmaceuticals.
This work contributed to broader scientific discussions surrounding molecular farming, plant-based expression systems, biosafety and the potential of plants as production platforms for complex recombinant proteins.
